Finding a Good Welding Helmet

Anyone who has worked with an old fashioned welding helmet that is near impossible to see through knows the importance of a good welding helmet. Decent helmets have come down in price and you can get an auto darking helmet for as little as $60 to $100 these days. This means that the helmet is normally easy to see through, much like green sunglasses. It automatically detects the presence of the welding arc and darkens using LCD Liquid Crystal Display technology.

When the arc disappears, the helmet becomes easy to see through again! With some practice, you won't even notice the helmet changing shades and welding is dramatically easier than with older permanently dark helmets. Though you do need to be careful about changing the batteries and making sure that the helmet is on, almost anyone who uses one is reluctant to return to the older style of helmet.

For $60 to $100, you can find an adequate auto darkening helmet. If you have more to spend and are looking for more comfort, you can find a more expensive helmet which has the primary improvement of having a larger viewable area so that your field of vision is not as constrained as with the less expensive helmets. With good helmets as cheap as they are, there's really no excuse for suffering with the old style impossible to use helmets any longer. Particularly for someone who doesn't weld every day, the increasing ability to see what you are doing is incredibly helpful.
