Cincinnati Bengals History Unique

The Cincinnati Bengals began their franchise in professional football as a member of the American Football League in 1968. They became a member prior to the merger that combined both leagues into one league now known as the NFL. They began as a member of the Western Division of the AFL, and then were transferred to the AFC Central Division in 1970. In 2002, their final move was to the AFC North. They play their games in Cincinnati at Paul Brown Stadium, and are coached by Marvin Lewis, with Owner and General Manager Mike Brown leading the franchise.

Cincinnati Bengals history began when Paul Brown (founder), was convinced by Governor James A. Rhoades that the state of Ohio needed a second professional team. Cincinnati was chosen for the location, which split the state in two when it came to professional football support. During the late 1930s and early 1940s, the American Football League had a team in Cincinnati called the Bengals, which is what made Brown choose that name for his team in 1968. The zoo was also home to the rare white Bengal Tiger, which is speculated to be the reason for his choice. Some people believe that Paul Brown chose precisely the same shade of orange for his team that his former team, the Cleveland Browns, used in their uniforms, and did it as an insult to Art Modell.

The helmet design simply had the "Bengals" name lettered in black on an orange background. This style was chosen over a striped design that is very much like the ones used today. When Brown was fired by Modell, he kept the rights to the equipment. This made it easy for him to turn his new team into look-alikes of former Cleveland Browns teams. They kept the same look until 1981, new helmets and a new uniform design was implemented for the team. Brown was at first discouraged by his acquisition, because they were signed to play in the AFL. Although, once he was informed that the team would be a part of the merger with the NFL in 1970, he established the team.

Hamilton County was facing problems finding the Reds a new stadium to call home, and the Cincinnati Bengals needed a football field. This created many complications for both of the teams, but eventually the problem was resolved with the building of a single facility on the riverfront, which had been abandoned. The facility was scheduled for completion for the 1970 season, and was rightly named Riverfront Stadium. The inaugural season was played at Nippert Stadium, currently home to the University of Cincinnati Bearcats. They finished with a 3-11 record, although they had the AFL Rookie of the Year in Paul Robinson.

Once the NFL merger was completed, the Cleveland Browns were moved into the AFC franchise, which was created from mostly AFL teams that joined the NFL. They were placed into the AFC Central alongside the Cincinnati Bengals, which created an instant rivalry that was initially fueled by the team's owner. Paul Brown named himself as coach of the team, where he remained for eight seasons. They moved to Riverfront Stadium the early 70s, which was a shared stadium with the Cincinnati Reds until 2000. They made it the playoffs three times throughout the 70s. In the 1980s, the Cincinnati Bengals history includes two Super Bowl appearances, but unfortunately gave the title to the San Francisco 49ers both times. Paul Brown passed away in 1990, but had already handed down owner control to his son, Mike Brown. This began a challenging part of Cincinnati Bengals history considering they subsequently had 14 losing seasons. The team began to turn around in 2003, Marvin Lewis was hired to be head coach. For the first time in 15 years, in 2005, they made it back to the playoffs. Since 2005, Cincinnati Bengals history has not been good, although 2009 is showing promise considering their winning record and more importantly the games the Bengals have won to get that record.

Do you have a surface, like a table, on which a portable grill can be placed when it's time to grill those hot dogs or hamburgers? If so, then any tabletop portable grill would work. If little or no room is available on existing table-high surfaces, then a portable grill with full-sized folding legs is an appropriate option. The most ideal type of portable grill for tailgating, though, attaches to the back of your vehicle and stays there during transport and grilling. NFL Star Insures Hair For $1M

NFL Player Troy Polamalu is notorious for his supersized hair, his shaggy mane reaches a metre out in all directions and that's when it's curly! It's so big it barely fits in his helmet and most of it tumbles out the back.

Polamalu's trademark hair won him a sponsorship deal with Head & Shoulders, under the umbrella corporation of Proctor & Gamble. The multi-national decided to protect their interests by taking out insurance on the Pittsburgh Steelers defender's hair to the tune of $1m.

Proctor and Gamble took out the policy with Lloyds of London, the insurer would not reveal what the policy covers but experts assume it involves damage, discolouring and natural hair loss.

The defender has been tackled several times by his long hair, which he claims is the most painful thing that has happened to him in a game. In 2006 he was grabbed by Larry Johnson of the Kansas City Chief's and pulled down by his hair as he was running for a touchdown after intercepting a pass.

The NFL governing body currently has no rules on having long hair and an estimated 10% of players now have hair protruding from the back of their helmets, something that has become somewhat of a trend.

The league also has no rules on tackling by means of pulling hair as their rules predate the hairy trend when every player had short to medium hair. Some also claim that with hair that long, spectators are unable to see his name and number on his shirt but as he is the only player with 3 foot hair, it's difficult to mistake him.

In 2008 the NFL's governing body proposed new rules that hair must be kept under the helmets and away from player's names but this was rejected. Some players have had second thoughts about their hair length, in 2003 Edgerrin James of the Indianapolis Colts was brought to the ground by someone grabbing his hair, the next day he turned up for training with his head shaved.

Polamalau has not seen hairdressing equipment or a salon chair for over a decade, that last time he had it cut was early 2000.

2010 NFL Predictions - Tennessee Titans

In 2008, the Tennessee Titans ended Indy's reign at the top of the AFC South by posting an NFL-best 13-3 regular season record. But the Titans were not able to build on their impressive 2008 campaign. In fact, they were 0-6 before you could even blink last season.

Tennessee's horrific start prompted head coach Jeff Fisher to give quarterback Vince Young another shot. The move paid off as Tennessee went on to finish the year 8-2. It was too little too late in terms of the playoffs, but the Titans' second half surge has them very confident as they enter their 2010 campaign.

Offense: Led by running back Chris Johnson, the Titans boasted the No. 2 ranked rushing offense in the NFL last season. Johnson was nothing short of spectacular as he became only the sixth back in NFL history to eclipse the 2,000 yard mark in a single season. Johnson also proved to be a major asset in the passing game, catching 50 passes for 503 yards. He will be the focal point of the Tennessee offense once again.

Young got the shot he was looking for, and he took full advantage, leading the Titans to eight wins in 10 games while posting a quarterback rating of 82.8, the highest of his career. Tennessee's strong running attack will give Young plenty of play-action opportunities.

The Titans will also need Young to make plays with his legs. He is not a pure pocket passer, but he is a great athlete. Making teams respect his ability to pull it down and run will make the offense even more feared.

Nate Washington and Kenny Britt lead a receiving corps that will get an added boost from rookie Damian Williams

Michael Roose, David Stewart, Eugene Amamo and Jake Scott return to form one of the best blocking units in football.

Defense: Because of Johnson, Tennessee's offense has the potential to give opponents headaches, but it will be all for not if the defense can't hold up on its end of the bargain. The Titans ranked No. 28 in the NFL in scoring defense last season, giving up 25.1 points per game. Their disappointing pass defense was responsible for most of those points. In fact, the Titans finished next to last in the league in passing defense, allowing 258.7 yards per game.

While Kyle Vanden Bosch and Keith Bulluck have found new homes, I'm confident that Tennessee will defend much better in 2010.

Stud tackle Tony Brown anchors a solid line that will get a boost from rookie defensive end Derrick Morgan. The linebacker corps will miss Bulluck, but veterans Will Witherspoon and Stephen Tulloch will keep this unit respectable.

There is far too much talent in the secondary for the Titans to defend the pass as poorly as they did last year. Cornerback Cortland Finnegan, who tallied five interceptions in 2009, and Pro Bowl safeties Michael Griffin and Chris Hope are all solid, and there is a lot of competition for the other corner spot, where the addition of rookie corner Alterraun Verner provides depth.

Prediction: 2nd AFC South - 2009 left a sour taste in the mouth of the Titans. They'll want nothing more than to get rid of that taste with a playoff berth, which is very much in the cards when you consider how close they came last season despite an 0-6 start. What Would Happen If There Was Relegation From the NFL?

May 24th 2009 saw the last day of the Premier League in English soccer. It's a huge day in the season, and led me to wonder what would happen if relegation was a feature of the mighty NFL - read on to find out more..!

As much as the NFL would like their sport to be a global passion, the fact of the matter is that it isn't.

Yes it's watched in many places around the world, but attempts to grow the sport outside the US have never really taken hold.

One main reason that I can see is that the sport is a franchise business, with every team being a franchise of the main business.

That's just not the way most sports run. With most sports, anyone can start a team, and progress through the ranks and divisions if they are good enough. This isn't the case with the NFL - there is no promotion to a higher league, and similarly there is no relegation to a lower league.

The Premier League in England is currently considered one of, if not *the* best league in the world, and to drop out of it costs a team maybe $100 million dollars in revenue - it's a huge blow to a team, as they must then play the following season in a far inferior league to try and battle their way back.

They have to spend a minimum of one season out of the top flight, and that's assuming they get back at the first attempt! Many teams have found that the culture shock of being in the lower division leaves them ill prepared for the battle.

The last day of the league is therefore filled with emotion from the fans that is hard to replicate in the NFL.
Big teams go down too, no-one is immune!

Teams like the Miami Dolphins, the San Francisco 49ers and Washington Redskins would probably all have suffered from relegation. Supposedly big teams, but they have all had years of bad form which would not see them stay in the top division if relegation was an issue.

It's an interesting concept, and one of the reasons why the NFL will never be a global passion.
