Becoming an NFL player was my dream since I was in junior high school, and I was one of the lucky few who actually made it all the way to the NFL. I have played for the New York Giants, the New Orleans Saints, the Washington Redskins, the Baltimore Ravens, and the Jacksonville Jaguars.

My life in the NFL was a remarkable experience. However, getting to the NFL was very difficult. In this article I want to discuss a few of the mental hurdles a young athlete will go through if they want to make it all the way to the NFL.

My preparation for the NFL began in high school when I realized that I had a chance to play Division One football. I attended an outstanding high school program at Eisenhower High School in Lawton, OK where I played against a rival school (Lawton High School) that has produced NFL talent including Michael Minter of the Carolina Panthers, Will Shields of the Kansas City Chiefs, Daly Gardner of the Miami Dolphins, James Trapp of the Oakland Raiders, and Jamal Brown of the New Orleans Saints.

Playing against the top athletes in high school really helped to raise my game to be the best it could be. As an athlete, your preparation for the pros starts when you decide you want to be the best athlete you can be for you--not for your parents, not for your girlfriend, and not for your friends. To be an NFL player you must have a burning desire to play with the best and you must do everything you can physically and mentally to make yourself able to compete with the best.

But being a great athlete is only half of what it takes to make it to the pros. Developing your mental skills is just as important as developing your physical skills.

First, you cannot play football if you have bad grades. The real work for becoming an NFL player starts in the classroom. For me, the class room was difficult and I had to work very hard to keep my grades up. But I understood that if my grades were bad, I would be kicked off the high school team. And, if I was kicked off the high school team, I would not be able to play college football, and college football is a requirement for becoming a pro player. Because of that, I worked very hard to keep my grades up.

If you want to become an NFL player, you must take your class work seriously to give yourself an opportunity to play college football. Here is a secret most student athletes don't know. Colleges love smart athletes. By being both a great student and a great athlete, you greatly increase your chances of being recruited by a scout for a major college football team. Why you ask? Smart players make smart decisions on the football field and help win games. If you look at many of the greatest NFL players, many of them are not the best athletes. What they are, are the smartest athletes. When you play in the pros, the plays are very complex and you need to think very quickly. That is why it is so important to build your brain power just as much as your athletic skills. Accomplishing this is one of the first big steps towards becoming a pro player.

Another important part of being a pro player is how you present yourself as a person. Do you get along well with your fellow athletes and coaches? Are you a good member of your community? College and pro teams want cooperative team members, not spoiled athletes that cause problems, get into trouble, and are an embarrassment to the organization. An athlete that causes problems with his team members and gets into trouble with the law hurts a team. Problem players are quickly removed from competitive sports teams. Therefore, if you want to make it to the NFL, keep yourself out of trouble and be a model person.

In conclusion, being a great athlete is not enough to make it to the pros. You must work hard both on and off the field. Be a person that your team can count on and be proud of. If you do this, you will increase your chances of being recruited by a college scout and making it to the pros.

Southern Methodist University (SMU) Mustangs Football National Championship Wins - 3 Victories

The Southern Methodist University (SMU) Mustangs football program claims three national titles in the nearly one hundred years that the sport has been played at the college in the Dallas, Texas area. The three national championships are from:

While SMU has never been awarded the distinction of a football national championship from the most highly regarded polls generated by the Associated Press (AP) or the Coaches Poll or even the more recently created Bowl Championship Series (BCS) system the university does claim football national championships based on designations bestowed on them by alternative sources.

When it comes to the highest level of college football the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), which has tournaments and formally recognizes a national champion for every other college sport, has refrained from officially crowning a college football national champ at the highest level. Prior to 2006 the highest level of college football was called Division 1-A. Since 2006 the term Division 1-A has been replaced with Division I Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS). With regards to both Division 1-A and more recently Division I FBS the NCAA only states that "a number of polling organizations provide a final ranking."

Despite the fact that the NCAA organizes a tournament and pronouncing an eventual national champion at the Division-II and Division-III levels of college football the governing body of college football has chosen to abstain from officially declaring a FBS (formerly Division-IA) national champion. Because of this fact a number of colleges have chosen to claim national titles for historical seasons despite consensus opinions to the contrary.

In 1935 the SMU football program went 12-1 in a season that was concluded with a bowl victory after beating Stanford 7-0 in the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California. Three different organizations declared the SMU team led by head coach Madison Bell as the best in the country. Those three organizations were (1) Dickinson, (2) Houlgate System, and (3) Sagarin Ratings.

In 1981 the Dallas based institution of higher learning claimed a second national championship after a 10-1 season under coach Ron Meyer where the Mustangs did not conclude their season with a bowl game. The low profile organization that declared SMU the best college football team in the country after that season was the little known group called the National Championship Foundation.

In 1982 Bobby Collins coached the SMU Mustangs to an 11-0-1 record over the course of a season that concluded with a thrilling 7-3 Cotton Bowl victor over the University of Pittsburgh. Future NFL Hall of Fame running back Eric Dickerson led the squad that finished second in the AP and Coaches Polls.

Although Penn State was widely accepted as the national champion with a substantially more difficult schedule than SMU the Penn State program finished with an 11-1 record. The lone loss to then number four ranked University of Alabama gave an organization that calls itself the Helms Athletic Foundation sufficient reason to declare SMU the national champion because the Mustangs finished with one tie and no losses while Penn State had one loss in week five of the 1982 season.

Um. No. There is no way that it is easy being a cheerleader. So much goes into the auditions, that you're lucky to even make it into the squad in the first place. Hundreds of girls try out and you have to be in the top 3% to make it in the squad, no kidding. They all dance good, look good, are energetic, enthusiastic, and have a great personality on top of all that. After they get into the squad, it takes hours of practice almost every day in order to get the NFL dancing routines down. It gets worse when they have to dance in the freezing cold, especially in the northern States (which some NFL teams use as an excuse for not having a cheerleading team and yes not every NFL team has a cheerleading squad). Outside of the dances, they also have to show up for charity events, make guest appearances, do photo shoots, and sometimes even travel overseas to entertain our very own US military troops to keep their morale high. Whoever said being a cheerleader was easy obviously hasn't seen one at work.

Myth: NFL Cheerleaders get to meet football stars and date them

Absolutely not. NFL Cheerleaders are not allowed to "fraternize" with the players. That means no flirting, no personal relationships, no personal "friendships", or anything that might imply a relationship outside of the professional realm of the NFL. Yes, they can interact a little bit at charity events and guest appearances but typically, you'd have better luck getting to know the football stars as a janitor cleaning their locker rooms or being some sort of groupie. Cheerleaders going out with the likes of Tom Brady and Randy Moss? Forget about it.

Myth: NFL Cheerleaders rack in the fame and fortune

How much do cheerleaders get paid in the NFL? The answer to that question is $15 to $50 a game. Heck, there are times when they don't get paid at all. They have to show up at guest appearance, photo shoots, overseas performances for US troops and all of that is most likely unpaid. Don't feel too bad for them. Some of them get out of cheerleading and find that a bunch of opportunities await them because of their NFL cheerleading elite status. As an NFL player, the locker room is our home away from home. This is where the team members become a family. This is where we bond and learn about each other's different cultures, personalities, and view on life.

On an NFL team, there are people from many different walks of life. People are from different races, different parts of the country, they grew up with different values, different religions, and different cultures. Being able to get to know these people and learn about their life is one of the things I enjoyed most about the NFL. It was such a great learning experience to interact with so many different people.

So what do NFL players talk about in the locker room? We talk about the same thing everybody else does. We talk a lot about our wives, girlfriends, families, children, movies, music, our problems, and of course, a lot of joking around and talking smack. On every team there are a couple of guys who love to play pranks and keep everyone guessing as to what is coming next. It is a lot of fun.

Another fun thing to do is haze the rookies. Giving rookies a hard time is always fun and it helps build camaraderie. How do we haze rookies? Well, we like to get several team members together and go out for dinner with a rookie and then make him pay the bill. We also like to make rookies carry our equipment. To really embarrass rookies, we'll make them get up in front of everybody and sing or dance. Sometimes we will give them a horrible haircut by shaving parts of their head. Sometimes we'll shave off their eyebrows too. Embarrassing rookies is always good fun.

What is inside the locker room? The locker room is setup just like home to help players relax. There are couches, big screen TV's, video games, and an attached cafeteria.

The locker room is also a place where we come together as a team to support each other, like when we lose a game or a player gets hurt or in trouble. The locker room is where a team's chemistry is created and it is that chemistry that makes a team great when they walk out onto the field.

Out of the NFC:

NY Giants - A lock, but watch out for a letdown in the playoffs.

Carolina Panthers - Sealed it up with a win versus Tampa Bay.

Minnesota Vikings - Beat up Chicago in week 13 to show they are the better team, rest of the schedule is ridiculous with three playoff caliber teams left, but I still see them going over Chicago, who has the easier schedule.

Arizona - Rest of the West is horrible, easily the worst division in football. Strange how the worst divisions in football are both western divisions. If Leinart develops, Arizona could dominate this division for a while.

Tampa Bay - Should get the wild card because they are too far ahead of the Bears. They can easily get to 11-5 with wins versus San Diego and Oakland.

NFC looks pretty straight forward, most of these teams should be a lock, Carolina and Tampa Bay could flip flop for the division champ and wild card.

Out of the AFC:

Tennessee - 12-1, best record in football, having a great season. Their defense will be dangerous in the playoffs.

Denver - Three games up on San Diego, but should be out first week of the playoffs. If they draft all defense the next 2 years and find some good veterans on D, may have a chance to put together a team to dominate the AFC West for a few years.

Pittsburgh - Made a statement against the Cowboys, and if they beat Baltimore for the second time this season, should be locked up.

New England - Too much experience on the roster with SB winning experience. I see the Jets falling off (Lost 2 straight). Miami is a nice story, but they too don't have enough yet.

Indianapolis - Wild card with a ton of playoff experience that will find a way to get in for the playoffs. Even though they've had some tough injuries, it would be a huge upset for the Jets or Dolphins to get this spot over them.

Why Do LSU Tigers Wear White in Football Games

LSU Tigers would wear white during their football games because of a tradition that has been started in 1958 by Coach Paul Dietzel.

Unlike college basketball, where the home teams wear white or the lighter-colored jerseys, most NCAA football teams wear their darker colored jerseys to home games. The LSU Tigers is noted for being one of the few to wear white jerseys. Let's find out how did this tradition started.

Paul Dietzel's Decision

In 1958, LSU's coach, Paul Dietzel, decided that the team would be wearing their white jerseys for the home games. They then won the national championship that same year. Believing it was good luck, the team decided to make it a tradition to wear white to their home games.

However, in 1982, new NCAA rules were passed which stated that home teams must wear darker colors in home games, prohibiting LSU from wearing white from 1983 to 1994. It wasn't until 1995, when LSU was granted permission by the NCAA to be able to continue with their tradition of wearing white.

Gerry DiNardo's lobbying

In 1995, their new coach, Gerry DiNardo, determined to bring back the tradition of wearing white, took it upon himself to appeal to the NCAA. He personally met members of the Football Rules Committee. His effort has paid off and the LSU team began wearing white every time they have their homes games. This was since 1995. The only stipulation was that the visiting team must agree to wear their darker jersey colors during these games. Ever since, LSU only had to wear their purple jerseys to home games 3 times. (Once was during a game against Vanderbilt in 1996. Vanderbilt refused since they were still angry at DiNardo leaving Vanderbilt to coach LSU.)

In 2009, NCAA amended their rules once more, no longer restricting teams on whether they should wear their lighter-colored jerseys to home games or not. Just as long as teams wore contrasting colors.

The NFL's Blackout Policy - Corporate Necessity Or PR Blunder?

I was shocked to hear that the Saturday night, August 15th, preseason game between my local San Diego Chargers and the visiting Seattle Seahawks had become a victim of the National Football League's 'blackout policy'. It did not sell out is the given reason. There will be more to come from all indications due to the economic hard times we are in. The NFL cites its policy as providing better games for television with large crowds in attendance.

Hogwash! The real reason is plain old greed. The NFL's object is to punish the home crowd if they do not show enough loyalty to buy all tickets to an NFL game, exhibition season or not! (The NFL has put out guidance that these games are to be referred to by all announcers and media persons as 'preseason' games and not the more truthful description of them as 'exhibition' football where the regular players are seldom seen. Instead, these games are 'tryouts' for rookies and unsigned free agents - pricey for what you pay to see, a 'real' football game.)

The NFL's policy on televising local games not sellouts reads as follows: "To ensure an NFL club's ability to sell all of its game tickets, and to make televised games more attractive to viewers through the presence of sellout crowds, the following policy is observed by the NFL: For a home game to be aired locally in the franchised market and in any secondary blackout market(s), the game must be sold out 72 hours in advance of kickoff. If the game is not a sellout by the 72 hour cutoff, both the home franchised market and the secondary markets of the carrying network will air an alternate game."

Time was that season ticket buyers were given these 'exhibition' type games at no cost as a reward for buying a season ticket package. Not anymore as these faithful supporters must also buy - at full price - the two home games of each team's 'preseason' as part of the deal. This amounts to tens of millions of dollars in extra revenue for the NFL.

Jim Steeg, a San Diego Charger front office official, explains the slowdown in ticket sales overall and the preseason dilemma as an economic problem vice one of a lack of fan enthusiasm for the game. "I think we're just not immune to it," Steeg said. "We're sitting here in San Diego, with the U.S. economy, the California economy, the housing bubble, all that sort of stuff that we've got the eye of the storm here. That's really what it comes down to."

The NFL is committing an egregious public relations gaff in pursuing this policy in these difficult economic times when so many are hurting money-wise and simply can't afford the considerable prices being asked now for pro football tickets. The reality is that there are fiscal priorities in today's world.

But, since when was the NFL considerate of the fans who support them? Just this spring, in the midst of devastating news of economic collapse here at home, the NFL was seriously contemplating outsourcing the Super Bowl to London in the near future. That is, until word leaked out about this manifestation of uncontrolled gluttony to the public causing such an uproar that it required the NFL to back off on such a stupid idea.

The NFL, as recently as this past weekend in Detroit, has declined to retreat on its greed-based stance when Commissioner Roger Goodell said the league will not alter its blackout policy. Is this guy, the same perpetrator of the offshore Super Bowl fiasco, for real or has he become immune to the country's hardships - especially the plight of the working people who provide the majority of the purchasing power to sell out NFL games?

Has greed overcome good old fashioned common sense and decency? It appears it has as Goodell's intentions reflect those of the bonus-giving Wall Street moguls who are oblivious to economic fair play.

Let me be so bold as to offer this advice to Goodell and his self-indulgent staff: Consider the times as they are in our country where millions are unemployed, battling enduring economic hardships in paying their mortgage and other pressing bills such as putting food on the table for their family, and recognize that they may have to consider these factors before buying expensive - and inflated, overpriced - football tickets. Announce in no uncertain terms - unequivocally - that the blackout policy is suspended for this season in consideration of the economically hard hit fans who have loyally and financially made the NFL successful in the past. Announce that their support has been appreciated to the extent that the NFL recognizes the plight they are in and will not begrudge them a chance to watch their home team on television even if they can not go to the game for monetary reasons. Give the fans an NFL 'bailout' this season at least - the NFL owes them that.

And guess what? I am willing to bet that the fans will be so appreciative in recognition of this kind gesture that they just may go buy some tickets that they might not otherwise have - a reward for the NFL's public relations savvy. Try it, Goodell. You will be pleasantly surprised at the positive results.

If you nincompoops at NFL corporate headquarters - you who are seemingly unaware of the gall of your actions in light of the times - continue your avaricious ways of blocking out home games on television, you will be equally surprised at the adverse impact which will far offset any ticket sales you might not have had. No one is more vicious - and vindictive - than an unappreciated football fan. No one!
